the only benefit of mes first is a bit more energy and fast casting. Rangers are more durable, with druids they have decent energy, and you also have expertise to cut down on skill costs for ranger. A good interupter is r/mes imo.

Lol, I'll be the one to suggest going with a Mesmer primary. They are a ton of fun, and are very versatile. They can deal large amounts of damage in a very short time, they can interrupt enemy spellcasters, can aid allies, and can burn through enemies' energy and sometimes steal it for yourself. If you're into putting a little more thought into your builds than the usual damage, heal, damage, heal etc, you'd love Mesmer. Check out the Mesmer forums in the Campfire for further info on 'em I started my PvE Mesmer as a Me/R, planning on focusing on the interrupts from both classes, but I ended up playing as a pure Mesmer, and I still do 98% of the time

I LOVE my ranger, but I also have a mesmer. To be honest, I can't really say I'd reccomend one that higher over the other. I don't think it's that much harder to find a group as a mesmer, except for maybe a little bit at the beggining of the game. If anything it might be easier at some parts since many groups will already have a couple rangers in them already.
If you choose ranger, you probably won't use your secondary that much, at least once lvl up a bit. If you choose mesmer however, there might be a few more skills you might tap into, but I don't see many ranger secondaries around and am not sure of a whole lot of skills you would use, unless you used a bow and marksmanship. I chose necro for my mesmers secondary and was able to use curses well with mesmer hexes. I hear ele secondary works well also.
Both classes can be similar in that they can both play a role in disrupting the enemy and causing them a lot of grief. Mesmers simply do this with spells and rangers use arrows.
